Published 20 July 2026 · Review when applicable requirements or guidance change.

This guide is general information, not legal or workplace-specific compliance advice. Requirements vary by workplace and circumstances.

A little preparation can reduce disruption and make the resulting records more useful.

Before the booking

  • Nominate a site contact.
  • Share operating hours and restricted areas.
  • Identify any deadline or upcoming audit.
  • Gather previous reports and asset lists.
  • Estimate equipment and fire-asset quantities.

On the day

Make accessible equipment available where practical, advise staff about the visit and identify any business-critical items that cannot be interrupted without agreement.

After the visit

Review failed items, exclusions and recommended actions. Confirm who owns each action and make sure the next due dates are recorded.
